Kid-Proof(ish) Kitchens: Speccing Lacquer for Family Life

JUNE 03, 2026  ◆  3 MIN READ
IN SHORT

No finish is child-proof; some are child-forgiving. Lacquer specced correctly is the most forgiving painted surface a family can buy.

Sheen and colour picks

Matte 10–15 GU hides fingerprints and micro-scuffs best; mid-tone colours (greige, sage, denim) hide daily evidence better than pure white or black. Save gloss for uppers beyond scooter height.

Hardware saves finishes

Handles concentrate grubby contact onto metal instead of lacquer edges — on family bases and bins, spec pulls rather than push-latch. Soft-close everything removes the slam variable entirely.

The family repair kit

Order touch-up pens with the kitchen. Crayon and marker lift with soapy water from sealed lacquer; the pen handles the inevitable chip in door-edge height nobody confesses to.

Frequently asked

Does washable mean scrubbable?

Wipe yes, scrub no — abrasive pads dull any sheen. Soapy microfibre removes almost every child material.

Best colour for hiding family wear?

Mid-tone matte colours — our greige, sage and denim families — show the least between cleans.
