IN SHORT

We can identify a kitchen's cleaning habits from a doorstep. These are the repeat offenders on the lab list.

We can identify a kitchen's cleaning habits from a doorstep. These are the repeat offenders on the lab list.

The abrasives

Melamine 'magic' sponges, cream cleansers, scrub pads: all sand sheen off, visible on matte instantly and gloss cumulatively. One-time use already leaves a burnished patch.

The solvents and films

Citrus degreasers and ammonia glass sprays attack the film's surface chemistry; silicone furniture polishes leave smear films that ghost under light and complicate future touch-ups. Vinegar neat etches slowly — diluted occasionally is survivable, pointless anyway.

What to use instead

Dish soap in warm water plus two microfibres — one damp, one dry — cleans every kitchen soil we encounter. For disinfecting, a lacquer-safe pH-neutral cleaner; ten seconds contact, then dry wipe.

Frequently asked

Are disinfecting wipes safe on lacquer?

Occasional use on satin survives; daily wiping dulls finish — pH-neutral cleaner is the safe habit.

Something left a shiny smear I cannot remove — what is it?

Silicone polish residue; remove with mild soap and dry buffing repeatedly, and stop the polish.
