Dark kitchens are lighting projects wearing paint. Get the lumens right and the drama is free.
Choosing the dark
Near-blacks with a hue (fir green, aubergine, iron blue) age better than dead black; matte hides dust and prints that gloss-dark advertises. RAL 6009, 7016 and 5011 families are the working shortlist.
The lighting maths
Dark absorbs — plan roughly double the lumens of a white scheme: layered task strips, in-cabinet glow, wall wash. Under-cabinet lighting is non-negotiable, not accent.
Relief surfaces
Pale stone, one glazed run with lit interior, warm metal hardware and timber floors give the eye landing points. All-dark-everything is the render that disappoints in person; dark plus three reliefs is the version that sells.
