Lacquer vs. Laminate (HPL) Cabinet Doors: Which Wins Where?

IN SHORT

Laminate earned its place in rentals and labs — it shrugs off abuse. But every laminate door has the same weak point: its edges.

Laminate earned its place in rentals and labs — it shrugs off abuse. But every laminate door has the same weak point: its edges.

Edges tell the story

An HPL door is a flat sheet glued to a core with a separate edge band; you can always find the seam, and moisture or impact attacks it first. Lacquer is sprayed around the whole door as one continuous skin — no banding, no seam, which is why handleless and profiled designs are lacquer territory.

Design range

Laminate only does flat. Fluted faces, framed profiles, arches and integrated J-pulls simply cannot be wrapped in HPL. If the design brief goes beyond a slab, the comparison ends there.

Where laminate still wins

Back-of-house casework, garage systems and ultra-budget multifamily units where doors are treated as consumables — laminate is the rational pick. Client-facing kitchens that need to look premium for a decade are lacquer's home game.

Frequently asked

Is lacquer more durable than laminate?

Laminate resists gouging slightly better; lacquer resists moisture ingress at edges far better and can be invisibly repaired, which laminate cannot.

Is there a price difference?

Slab laminate is cheaper per door; once profiles or long-term refinishing enter the picture, lacquer's lifetime cost is usually lower.
