Ask why an Italian brand's gloss looks a metre deep and the answer is polyester: a thick catalysed finish sanded and polished like automotive paint.
Build thickness
Polyester goes on many times thicker than conventional lacquer, which allows that glass-slab depth after polishing. It is also slow, expensive and unforgiving — a true factory-only process.
Cost and lead time
Poly programs price at the top of the market with long lead times. Polished high-gloss polyurethane lacquer reaches near-comparable visual results at a fraction, which is why it dominates the premium-but-sane segment.
Repair reality
Both repair by local sand-and-repolish in skilled hands; lacquer's thinner film makes touch-ups faster and cheaper. For matte and satin work, polyester offers no advantage at all — that market is entirely lacquer's.
