Sunlight and Lacquer: Preventing Fade in Bright Rooms

IN SHORT

A kitchen wall that takes six hours of direct sun ages differently to its shaded neighbour. The fix is specification, not fear.

A kitchen wall that takes six hours of direct sun ages differently to its shaded neighbour. The fix is specification, not fear.

Chemistry first

Quality 2K polyurethane systems carry UV stabilisers; waterborne whites also resist the amber shift solvent finishes show. Specify non-yellowing chemistry for bright rooms and whites by default — ours is.

Colour vulnerability

Deep organic reds and some bright yellows fade fastest in any coating; earth tones, greys, blues and greens hold best. If the scheme is a saturated warm colour on a sun wall, plan glazing film or shading into the project.

Detailing against the sun

Low-E or UV-filtering film on the offending glass cuts the dose massively and protects floors too. Rearranging the palette — pale perimeter on the sun wall, colour on the island — solves it architecturally.

Frequently asked

Will white lacquer yellow in the sun?

Waterborne white systems are non-yellowing; aged solvent finishes were the source of that reputation.

Can a faded door be fixed?

Yes — doors respray to original colour; addressing the glazing stops recurrence.
